Periodic Inspection Training
Regulations Part 396 requires that all commercial motor vehicles pass a periodic (annual) inspection. The inspection must be performed by a qualified individual. To help maintenance personnel understand the requirements for the inspection, the Ohio Trucking Association and the Ohio Trucking Maintenance Council offer a two-day Periodic Inspection Training (PIT) course. This program has been developed to meet the requirements of FMCSR 396.19.

Instructing our course is Doug Turpening. Doug is a North American Standards Trained Inspector and trainer for the civilian side of trucking. Doug retired from the Ohio State Highway Patrol after 27 years working in Commercial Enforcement and as a Patrol Academy Instructor. Doug is the past Executive Director of the National Safety Council of Central Ohio and is currently a Regional Safety Manager for a major trucking company. He has presented this PIT program at every major port location across the country. He is also on the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Vehicle Committee that reviews and puts forward out of service items for state inspectors’ enforcement.
